A surprise ride in Kingston

The magic happens when you are on a corner, waiting for the bus that will take you to the bus station, where you will take a second bus. Suddenly, a person stops near you:

“Hi girls! I saw you two looking at your phones and carrying these bags. Do you need help finding a direction? Are you going to the bus station? I have a truck. My two dogs are in the car, but I can take you there.”

After some seconds of hesitation (after all, we were taught not to enter strangers’ cars.. hehe) and, impressed by the generosity that keeps crossing our path, we accepted the offer. Our backpacks were heavy and it isn’t pleasant to get on and off buses carrying suitcases.

During the drive to the bus station we found out that our helper was in the process of selling her house, so she was on her day off from work. She was 47 and a mother of four who dreamed of traveling through California to celebrate her 50th birthday. She was driving down the road, saw us, and decided to offer some help.

I thought I could do something nice for you two, she said.

In the end, our new friend —we don’t know her name but we made sure to take a picture with her— offered us more than just a car ride when we were lost. She gave us one more reason to believe, to keep following the path we chose to walk. She may don’t even know that, but she inspired us to continue this endless cycle of kindness and good intentions. We always remember this story when we see an opportunity to help someone too.
As we reach our 100th day on the road, we understand this event as a sign: ‘Keep your hearts open and your souls light, girls. Do your best. The rest, the universe will take charge of ‘.
